May 17 2024

NF Awareness Month

DFi member organisation Neurofibromatosis Ireland (NF Ireland) are shining a light on the condition today, Friday 17 May which is World NF Awareness Day.

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that affects more than 3,000 children and adults living in Ireland and 2 million people worldwide. Neurofibromatosis, or NF,  causes tumours to grow on nerves throughout the body, and may cause blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain and cancer. There is currently no cure for the disorder which is also classed as a rare disease.

NF Ireland aims to be a voice for NF patients and their families. Their primary aim is to inform sufferers and their families of the disorder, supporting them and letting them know they
are not alone with the condition. NF Ireland provide support and information on Neurofibromatosis to patients, families, and healthcare providers.

Today, Friday 17 May will see buildings and landmarks across the world lighinting up to shine a light on this rare disease.  Over the years, hundreds of landmarks around the world have helped Shine a Light on NF and this year will be no different. Here in Ireland the following buildings will be light up in Blue and Green for NF Ireland association:
