January 13 2023, 11:56am
DFI attended a workshop organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and the Housing Agency on the topic ‘Inclusive Design Unlocked- Transforming disabled peoples’ lives through design excellence’ on Wednesday 11 January. The workshop promoted accessible and inclusive design. There were three presentations at the workshop from:
- A tenant living in a Local Authority accessible home and the Local Authority architect who designed the home
- An architect and parent who has designed her own house to meet the needs of her family, including her son who has severe autism
- CEO of Saint John of God Housing Association.
All the speakers stressed the importance of a home designed to meet the individual’s needs and highlighted the importance of universal design. It also highlighted some of the barriers to accessing appropriate housing including minimum standards not going far enough, level of demand and the impact of regulation.
The workshop was part of the Housing Unlocked exhibition which showcases eight architect-led proposals to unlock housing potential in villages, towns and cities in the Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin. The exhibition runs until February 2023. Learn more here.
