'I am a dedicated advocate for the full implementation of UN CRPD and the full inclusion of people with disabilities in our society.' - Elaine Teague, CEO, DFI

Q and A 2 (1)

We are delighted to bring you a question and answer session with Elaine Teague, the new CEO of the Disability Federation of Ireland. Elaine joined us on Monday 20 May and she is just about to mark her first month with DFI. Our Communications Manager Brenda caught up with her for a five minute chat:

Brenda: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Elaine: I joined DFI last month, having worked in in the disability sector for more than 30 years. I am a dedicated advocate for the full implementation of UN CRPD and the full inclusion of people with disabilities in our society. Outside of work I am a proud parent of three teenage kids and have two dogs to keep me busy. I love to spend time outdoors and can often be found walking in the hills above Dublin. I describe myself as a parent, a sister, a daughter, a friend and neighbour, a walker, and a swimmer. I don’t love cooking… but do love to eat well.

NED 2024 1Brenda: How has your first month been with DFI?

Elaine: My first month in my new role has been nothing short of fascinating. My work so far, has been filled with meeting members of DFI, hearing from people with disabilities, engaging with the political system and being involved in a number of ongoing projects.  Each day continues to bring new experiences and learning opportunities. The dynamic nature of the role has kept me on my toes and constantly pushing myself to step outside of my comfort zone. I am honoured to be the CEO of DFI and I am excited to be part of such a vibrant and committed team.

Brenda: What have you focused in on during your first month in DFI?

Elaine: In my first month, my focus has been on meeting key stakeholders, reviewing governance arrangements and immersing myself in the day-to-day work. Meeting the team has been a highlight- it has given me the opportunity to collaborate, exchange ideas and build strong working relationships. This first month has provided me with some great insights into the key challenges facing the team which has enabled me to hit the ground running.

Brenda: What are you looking forward to in the coming months?

Elaine: I am really looking forward to the upcoming Annual General Meeting where I will have the opportunity to meet more of our members and share with them the achievements of DFI in 2023. Following the AGM there is a Policy Seminar to look back on recent disability policy and consider the future of disability policy in Ireland. This seminar will bring together a panel of experts including people with lived experience of disability. The seminar will also mark John Dolan’s retirement as CEO of DFI. We are hosting the seminar at an important time as the new Disability Strategy is currently being developed. I hope our gathering will provide a useful forum for reflection and discussion with a wide range of stakeholders.

There are lots of other events coming up for us but above all, I am looking forward to witnessing the positive impact of our collective efforts and seeing the tangible positive impact DFI has.

Q5. Have you a favourite quote that has always stuck with you and inspired you?

Elaine: Yes, it's by Helen Keller who said: "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much".
