Local Area Coordination is an innovative approach to supporting people with disabilities, mental health needs and older people (and their families/carers) to achieve their vision for a good life, to support people to be part of and contribute to their communities and to strengthen the capacity of communities to welcome and include people (Ref: Inclusive Neighbourhoods).
A Local Area Co-ordinator works with 50-60 individuals, their families and community, bringing together a range of roles into a single point of contact. The co-ordinator builds relationships with organisations and services and gets to know the strengths, skills and resources in the area. Support is built around existing strengths, ability and capacity in the individual, family and local community.
This event has been organised to support increased awareness of Local Area Coordination and discuss its delivery within the Mayo region. Ref: briefing paper developed by the National Disability Authority here.
