Consultations about supports for young people with disabilities
March 5 2018, 11:03am
If you are a young person with a disability or a carer who gets Domiciliary Care Allowance, DMC, your views are now being sought on improving supports.
Have your say by clicking on the links below for upcoming consultations in Dublin, Sligo, Limerick and Cork. You will be helping the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to improve supports to young adults.
A direct mail to all recipients of DCA to take part in a survey on the proposed significant policy changes will be sent shortly by the Department. The consultations dates are mostly in March though some changes have been made due to the bad weather.
The consultations will be wide ranging and inspired by recommendations 9a b and 10 in 2016’s “Make Work Pay for People with Disabilities” These highlighted the importance of early intervention, that is supporting young adults through;
· education,
· Training,
· social inclusion according to their capacity.
At the time of the report launch the then Minster and now Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar ruled out any changes without support from the disability sector. This is because parents and families have an understandable expectation that a child getting DCA will transfer to disability allowance at the age of 16.
