International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Tuesday 17 October
October 13 2023, 10:42am
Next Tuesday 17 October is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Given the ongoing high poverty rates of disabled people, it is important for us to mark this day and highlight the deprivation that disabled people live with. As you may remember, last year we made a video on this theme, with help from self-advocates Catherine Cooper from Central Remedial Clinic and Mark Mitchell from MS Ireland. Sadly all the issues covered in the video are still relevant. You can watch the video here.
DFI will be marking the day on social media, by highlighting key statistics, and the human impact of poverty. Do join us and use the hashtags #EndPoverty #17OctIRL #RespectingTheDignity #CostOfDisability
There is also an event taking place in Dublin on 17 October from 11.00am to 12.30pm at the Human Rights and Poverty Stone, Custom House Quay, Dublin 1. The gathering will include testimonies based on lived experiences of poverty and socio-economic discrimination, speeches, a creative common gesture, music and songs.
