Award winning play No Magic Play returns for an Irish tour in November

Magic Pill Productions has announced the return of the award-winning play, No Magic Pill by Christian O’Reilly, for an Irish tour in November 2024. Dates and venues are as follows: 

• Black Box Theatre, Galway 7 - 9 November
• Backstage Theatre, Longford 12 - 13 November
• Glór, Ennis 19 - 20 November
• The Civic, Tallaght 22 - 23 November

No Magic Pill is the heartfelt, hilarious and irreverent story of disability activist Martin Naughton from award-winning writer Christian O’Reilly and directed by Raymond Keane. No Magic Pill was the winner of the Audience Choice Award at the 2022 Irish Times Theatre Awards and wowed audiences and critics alike when it premiered that year.

Commenting on the Irish tour, playwright Christian O’Reilly said, "I'm thrilled to be bringing back No Magic Pill. I was blown away by the response from audiences and critics in 2022. It told me that our gamble had paid off, that casting disabled actors was the right decision artistically, giving the production an authenticity and an integrity that was so important to us. People told us they were surprised by the show. Not only did it change how they think about disability, but they found it funny, moving and romantic, a love story competing with a quest for human rights in a thrilling, energetic and entertaining way. I want more people to enjoy this show. I want packed houses and great conversations. I want people to feel included, transformed and entertained."

Inspired by real-life activist and wheelchair-user, Martin Naughton, leader of the disability rights movement in Ireland (who passed away in 2016), this production breaks new ground in Irish theatre in its casting of disabled actors and also in its considerations for disabled audience members. 

No Magic Pill will be presented with additional accessibility considerations for disabled patrons, including increased seating for wheelchair users and their companions, shows with Audio Description, touch tours and Irish Sign Language Interpretation. Full cast details will be announced soon. 

No Magic Pill is funded by the Arts Council and is presented in association with Independent Living Movement Ireland, Irish Wheelchair Association and ourselves in the Disability Federation of Ireland.
