DFI Member's Survey Highlights the Impact and Challenges of Disability Organisations

Issued on March 18 2025

DFI has released the key findings from its recent DFI Member's Survey, providing valuable insights into the impact, challenges, and funding landscape of disability organisations across Ireland.

With an impressive 60% response rate from DFI member organisations, the survey results underscore the vital role these groups play in supporting disabled people nationwide. According to the data, responding members:

  • Delivered services to over 133,500 individuals
  • Provided more than 4.6 million hours of support
  • Employed 11,400 staff and mobilised nearly 8,000 volunteers
  • Were allocated a total of €496 million in state funding

A strong and united voice for disability advocacy

DFI commissioned independent researchers Ann Clarke and Tom Martin to collect and analyse the survey responses, capturing the collective strength of its members. The findings reveal the breadth of work being done to ensure that disabled people have access to essential supports, advocacy, and opportunities for independent living.

However, while these numbers highlight the sector's impact, the survey also sheds light on significant funding challenges. Although 85% of funding comes from statutory sources, nearly one-quarter (23%) of members receive no HSE funding, relying instead on fundraising and alternative income streams.

Satisfaction with DFI support

The survey also provided feedback on DFI’s role, with 95% of respondents expressing satisfaction with the support they receive. This positive response reinforces DFI’s commitment to strengthening advocacy, networking, and capacity-building initiatives to empower its members and amplify their voices.

Looking ahead: strengthening the disability sector

DFI encourages all members to stay engaged, share their thoughts, and contribute to shaping future strategies that will continue to drive progress in disability services across Ireland.
