Input to European Semester Process 2024 - Better Europe Alliance

Issued on November 30 2024

The Better Europe Alliance is a coalition of Irish organisations working together to shape a fairer, more sustainable Europe. Bringing together social justice and equality groups, including the Disability Federation of Ireland, environmental organisations, and SIPTU, Ireland’s largest trade union, the Alliance advocates for policies that tackle poverty, strengthen public services, protect the environment, and ensure no one is left behind.

At the heart of this effort is the European Semester, the EU’s annual process for guiding economic and social policy. While traditionally focused on financial stability, the Alliance ensures that social fairness and sustainability are equally prioritised in Ireland’s and Europe’s plans for the future.

In this year’s report, the Better Europe Alliance calls for:

  • Stronger action to reduce poverty and support those on low incomes
  • Greater investment in essential public services like health, education, and housing
  • Fair climate policies that protect the most vulnerable
  • A stronger voice for civil society in decision-making
  • The Alliance believes that Ireland and the EU must take a balanced approach—one that values people, the planet, and prosperity in equal measure.
