More about Phase Two
Phase Two seeks to further understand the current service and support pathways between existing and developing statutory and voluntary community-services for people with neuro-rehabilitative needs in CHO 2, 3 and 6. The information obtained will inform the work of the Community Workstream of the Neuro-Rehabilitation Strategy which had its first meeting in November 2023. Â
The joint project, led by the HSE, Disability Federation of Ireland and the Neurological Alliance of Ireland engaged with 56 people with neurological conditions and 137 service providers to establish the current picture of community neuro-rehabilitation services in Ireland.  Â
The findings of this work have been launched by the Minister of State Ann Rabbitte TD on 16 Oct 2024. Â
The report identifies the challenges and gaps experience by people with with neuro-rehabilitative needs when seeking to access Neuro-Rehabilitation services in Ireland. The report also outlines several detailed recommendations to address these challenges, including: Â
- Increasing knowledge and information on services available in the community for people with neurological conditionsÂ
- Improving how services work togetherÂ
- Providing access to services based on needÂ
- Funding and resourcing specialist services in the communityÂ
- Designing future services to support the continuum of care for people with neurological conditions.Â
The recommendations will be developed into actionable objectives under the National Neuro-Rehabilitation Strategy. Â
In the coming months, a series of interactive workshops are planned to key stakeholders, including those who engaged in the project, in order that they can become more familiar with the report findings, and consider how the recommendations may be relevant to their circumstances.  Â
More updates on the workshops will be available on this webpage.

Background to the Project
The Health Service Executive (HSE), Neurological AIliance of Ireland (NAI) and the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) are the project partners on the Neuro-Mapping Project.Â
Dr Nicola O’Malley is the Neuro Mapping Research Project Officer. The Neuro-Mapping Steering Group has been established to advise and guide the work and the overall governance for this project sits with the National HSE Neuro Rehab steering group.Â
In April 2023, the report and outputs of the first phase of neuro-mapping project were published.  Whilst the findings of this work acknowledged the key role that voluntary organisations play in providing community-based services to people with a neurological condition across Ireland, it noted the need to harness opportunities to enable further integration between statutory and voluntary community-based services, to optimize access.   Â
