Neuro-Mapping Project Phase Two Launch - 16 October 2024

The report of phase two of the Neuro-Mapping Project was launched by the Minister of State Ann Rabbitte TD on 16 Oct 2024. The project was led by the HSE, Disability Federation of Ireland and the Neurological Alliance of Ireland, and it engaged with 56 people with neurological conditions and 137 service providers to establish the current picture of community neuro-rehabilitation services in Ireland.

Key findings from the report include:

  1. There are not enough specialist community Neuro-Rehabilitation Services
  2. It is difficult to find what services are available in the community
  3. There are obstacles to attending services, including waiting lists, where you live and access to transportation
  4. There are not enough long-term supports, particularly for physical and psychological well-being.
  5. Having a support network is important.

The full report and summary report are below.

As part of the dissemination programme, we are holding a series of workshops with key stakeholders, including the individuals who participated in the project from CHO 2,3 and 6, which is taking place on Weds 4 Dec.  In early 2025 we will be holding two further workshops for DFI and NAI member organisations and HSE regions.

Background to the Project

The Health Service Executive (HSE), Neurological AIliance of Ireland (NAI) and the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) are the project partners on the Neuro-Mapping Project.

Dr Nicola O’Malley is the Neuro Mapping Research Project Officer.  The Neuro-Mapping Steering Group has been established to advise and guide the work and the overall governance for this project sits with the National HSE Neuro Rehab steering group.

In April 2023, the report and outputs of the first phase of neuro-mapping project were published.  Whilst the findings of this work acknowledged the key role that voluntary organisations play in providing community-based services to people with a neurological condition across Ireland, it noted the need to harness opportunities to enable further integration between statutory and voluntary community-based services, to optimize access.
